Actually, I saw this picture on flickr the other day, and from the tags there it appears the slits are because they're stretched (i.e. intentionally), so she probably put in the 'normal' earrings instead of plugs/tunnels just for the photo.
But it probably wouldn't be a good idea for her to wear these for very long...
It think it looks kind of cool actually. I used to know a girl who always wore the same pair of hoops (medium sized) and they had opened her piercings a little so that when you looked at her you could actually see daylight through the hole next to the wire.
My gym instructor has one ear that has been cut by wearing heavy wire earrings for many years. She dancing a lot whilst wearing heavy earrings when she was younger.
