I personally don't agree with that. Many fashionistas will try and tell you that but it's just their way of justifying their profession. The truth is hoops look good on anyone
I agree with hlover, it is just a matter of taste. To choose among big earrings, I would just take into consideration the length of your (his/her) neck. If it is long, then it is just a matter of taste, maybe you will like big hoop earrings on round faces or maybe just long dangles, or both; only testing each type and seeing the results will help.
However, if your neck is quite short, unless you like the feeling of big hoops or other big earrings resting on your shoulders and seeing them without moving your head (which I love personally <3), I would recommend from small to medium sized earrings for you to be comfortable with them.
